Lockhart ISD Inclement Weather Planning and Communication

Decision-Making Process:

When inclement weather is predicted or unfolding, senior district leaders consult with local emergency management officials and weather experts to assess weather conditions. Lockhart ISD spans over 300 square miles and has many road conditions and bridges to consider. Also, the majority of LISD staff commute to work each day. For these reasons, road conditions across the region are assessed to make decisions.

Timeline for Decisions:

  • 4:00 p.m.: We receive weather briefings to evaluate potential impacts. Closure or delay decisions may be made if the forecast strongly supports a plan of action.
  • 6:00 p.m.: Internal district staff meet to share updates and assess any implications for the next day.
  • 8:00 p.m.: When possible, a final decision is made to ensure families and staff are informed before bedtime.

In some cases, when school is scheduled for normal operations or delayed start, and the weather forecast and conditions change overnight, we will reassess early in the morning. We will communicate any changes no later than 5:00 a.m. to ensure families and staff are informed as early as possible. In cases where a decision is made to cancel school, the decision is final and will not be changed the following morning. We make every effort to communicate as early as possible to allow families and employees time to make appropriate arrangements.

Communication Channels:

We will share updates via email and text messages through ParentSquare and our official social media accounts on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram. Additionally, we will inform local media outlets of any closures or delayed starts to help spread the word.

Please ensure we have your current phone numbers and email addresses in our Skyward system so you receive up-to-date information. You can log into Skyward Family Access HERE and follow these step by step instructions to update your information.

In the event of a delayed start, all school operations will begin two hours later than usual. For example:

  • Elementary School starts at 7:25 a.m., with a delayed start, it will begin at 9:25 a.m.
  • Buses will arrive two hours later than the regular pick-up time. You can track your bus status on the Bus Info page.
  • All classes will begin two hours later than the usual start time.

Additional Details:

  • All staff should report to work two hours later than their usual report time.
  • All early morning student activities and practices are canceled.
  • Schools will dismiss at the regular time, with no changes to afternoon schedules.
