Orchestra
Offered to students at the Junior High and the High School, the LISD orchestra program provides students a chance to learn either the violin, viola, cello or bass. The orchestra performs in events across the district, and works hard to support the community in whatever ways are available. Formed only four years ago, the orchestra program is utilizing Solo and Ensemble, TMEA All State, and UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluation to continuously hone the students’ skills and prepare them for success in their post-high school life.
Mariachi
LISD’s newest addition to the fine arts offerings, the mariachi program is currently accepting any interested students that attended Lockhart High School. Available instruments are trumpet, violin, guitar, vihuela, and guitarron. All students that participate in mariachi will learn the mariachi style of playing, mariachi standards, and singing.
Band
The Roaring Lion Band, offered in grades 6-12, is composed of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Multiple levels of concert band are offered at Lockhart Junior High School and Lockhart High School, and all high school band members participate in the Roaring Lion Marching Band. Additional performance opportunities include Jazz Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble, as well as Solo and Small Ensemble events. The Roaring Lion Band has a history of excellence and success at all UIL and TMEA events.
Choir
The Lockhart Choir program provides a space for lions to develop interpersonal skills, prepare for musical post secondary endeavors, and find their pride through the relentless pursuit of musical excellence. At Lockhart Junior High, students are empowered to unlock their potential through one of many ensembles designed to maximize their experience with their experience level and voice type. LJHS Choirs perform at many concerts and community events throughout the academic year as well as participating in UIL and TMEA contests in the spring semester. At Lockhart High School, singers of all skill levels are locked on excellence in ensembles of all skill levels and for all voice types. LHS Choirs perform at 4 concerts per school year as well as >numerous district and community events. In addition, LHS Singers have the opportunity to participate in UIL solo and group events, compete in the TMEA All State Choir audition process, and attend other adjudicated events, such as Capital City Clash. LHS’s award-winning chamber ensemble, Vox Lux, is another performance opportunity for lions to pursue excellence and perform in their community!
Dance
Dance, offered in grades 6-12, provides a range of experiences in LISD. Beginning and Intermediate Dance classes are offered at Lockhart Junior High School. Students gain exposure to classical, modern, jazz, and contemporary styles. Lockhart High School offers multiple beginning and introductory dance classes, as well as varsity and non-varsity dance/drill team. Performance opportunities include local concerts, contests, athletic events and community events.
Theatre Arts
Theatre Arts encompasses a wide array of classes including beginning level, advanced production, and technical theatre for grades 6-12. There are abundant opportunities for students to perform on stage. Students who prefer the backstage experience can choose Technical Theatre and learn set design/construction, lighting, and sound. The Lockhart ISD Theatre program is among the top Texas JH/HS in UIL One Act Play competition.
Visual Art
General 6-8 Art and High School Art 1 courses are available at Lockhart Junior High School. Lockhart High School courses range from introductory drawing, painting, photography and sculpture to Advanced Placement Art courses. AP Drawing, AP 2D and AP 3D are offered at the High School. LISD students compete at the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) each year, with a history of earning superior ratings and medaling at the state level.
Piano
The Lockhart High School Piano program offers four scaffolded course levels catering to musicians of all experience levels. Whether a student has never touched a piano or has played their entire life, there are plenty of new opportunities to learn in our 20-instrument digital piano lab! LHS pianists perform in 2 recitals per academic year and advanced students have the opportunity to compete in UIL Solo and Ensemble contest in the spring.
AP Music Theory
Available to the most advanced music students at Lockhart HS, AP Music Theory focuses on the development of analytical and aural skills. Students will study note intervals, key signatures, and chord structures, and will practice rhythmic and aural dictation, as well as sight singing. The >course culminates in the ability to compose 4 part harmony using Common Practice techniques, all leading to the AP Music Theory test for college credit.
Applied Performance Class
Applied Music classes include vocal and instrumental techniques for advanced students. The overall goal of the class is to help students develop performance and technical skills for advancement into upper level high school and college programs on instrument or voice.
