Welcome to Lockhart ISD’s Fine Arts Department. Below you will find information about the wide range of Fine Arts programs offered in our schools. Whether your child is interested in band, orchestra, choir, dance, theater arts, or visual arts, Lockhart ISD has excellent programs available at all grade levels.

While striving for excellence in performance and artistic expression, Lockhart ISD’s Fine Arts programs endeavor to educate the whole child and enrich the life of each young person. Please read below for details about all of our programs from elementary to high school.

Elementary Schools

Lockhart ISD’s commitment to fine arts education begins at our five elementary campuses. We strive to provide equal exposure and opportunity to all K-5 students across our district. Each campus has its own Art teacher and Music teacher with no shared or traveling teachers. Exposure to Art and Music, their histories, and cultural backgrounds enrich the lives of all of our elementary students.

Elementary Art
In Lockhart ISD elementary schools students learn the fundamental techniques of producing, collaborating, observing, and critiquing art in a variety of modalities including drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, and other art forms. The elements and principles of art are explored through use of a variety of materials. Students work on fine motor skills, problem solving, and how to express their unique artistic voice. Student art is displayed prominently throughout the school district and community.

Elementary Music
Students in Lockhart ISD elementary music classes learn the fundamental and essential skills which will enable them to create music. Music literacy, singing, playing instruments, and body movement are part of the curriculum. Through performing and listening students gain understanding of the fundamental elements of music. Students learn the foundations of music reading and writing and gain exposure to all wind, string, and percussion instruments.

Secondary Schools

Fine Arts Wing
The 700 Wing of Lockhart High School features the beautiful Gerry Ohlendorf Performing Arts Center. This 820 seat hall hosts all student concerts, recitals, plays, as well as community-based events and touring shows. This wing also provides class and rehearsal space for our Orchestra, Choir, Band , Piano, and Theater Arts departments.

Orchestra
Our String Orchestra program is the latest addition to the Lockhart Fine Arts family. Launched in the fall of 2020 under the direction of Danielle Winton, Orchestra is now offered in grades 6 - 12. Orchestra is comprised of violin, viola, cello, string bass, and piano/harp. The Lockhart Orchestra program will begin participating in UIL events in Spring 2022. Lockhart ISD is committed to building a world class string orchestra program.

Band
The Roaring Lion Band, offered in grades 6-12, is comprised of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Multiple levels of concert band are offered at Lockhart Junior High School and Lockhart High School, and all high school band members participate in the Roaring Lion Marching Band. Additional performance opportunities include Jazz Ensemble and Percussion Ensemble, as well as Solo and Small Ensemble events. The Roaring Lion Band has a history of excellence and success at all UIL and TMEA events.

Choir
Offered in grades 6-12. Choir features a variety of ensembles at all levels. The Junior High offers beginning, intermediate, and advanced groups for boys and girls. High School has varsity and non-varsity ensembles for men’s and women’s voices. The Lockhart Choirs participate in all UIL and TMEA events.

Dance
Dance, offered in grades 6 - 12, provides a range of experiences in LISD. Beginning and Intermediate Dance classes are offered at Lockhart Junior High School. Students gain exposure to classical, modern, jazz, and contemporary styles. Lockhart High School offers multiple beginning and introductory dance classes, as well as varsity and non-varsity dance/drill teams.

Theatre Arts
Offered in grades 6-12, Theatre Arts encompasses a wide array of classes including beginning level, advanced production, and technical theatre There are abundant opportunities for students to perform on stage. Students who prefer the backstage experience can choose Technical Theatre and learn set design/construction, lighting, and sound. The Lockhart ISD Theatre program is among the top 20 Texas 5-A Schools in UIL One Act Play competition.

Musical Theatre
Each year our fine arts department combines forces to produce a Broadway-style musical production. Theatre Arts, Technical Theatre, Band, Orchestra, Choir, and Dance will come together this winter to present this production in the GOPAC.

Visual Art
Offered in grades 6-12, a wide variety of Art classes are available at the Lockhart Junior High School and Lockhart High School. Courses range from introductory drawing to advanced 3-D and Photography. Advanced Placement Art III and IV courses are available at the High School. LISD students compete at the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) each year, with a history of earning superior ratings and medaling at the state level.

Piano
At Lockhart High School, we offer beginner and intermediate level piano classes in our 20-instrument piano lab.

AP Music Theory
Lockhart High offers Advanced Placement Music Theory class. This college prep course is designed for experienced music readers and performers. Chord structures and progressions, voice leading, and score analysis are studied in depth.

Applied Performance Class
Experienced musicians, singers, and actors can explore advanced repertoire, improve performance habits, and prepare college audition material.

Home School UIL Participation

Texas House Bill 547 gives school districts the option to allow homeschooled students residing within district boundaries to participate in UIL activities as a member of the district's teams/activities/events.

Lockhart ISD will allow these students to participate beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, provided they meet the following guidelines:

Academic Eligibility:

Provide proof of residency.
All homeschooled students must demonstrate grade-level academic proficiency on any nationally recognized, norm-referenced assessment instrument, such as the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, Stanford Achievement Test, California Achievement Test, or Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills. LISD will accept these assessment results if they are administered and reported by a third party. Results must be current meaning within the previous school year and should be submitted no later than the end of the first six weeks grading period of the participating year.
In order to maintain academic eligibility, the homeschooled family must periodically (in accordance with LISD's grading calendar) provide written verification to LISD stating that the student is receiving a passing grade in each course or subject.

Participation Requirements:

A homeschooled student must declare intention to participate in a
sport/event/activity prior to August 1st.
A homeschooled student must participate in all required activities of the
sport/event/activity they are a part of, unless otherwise approved by the appropriate coach or UIL sponsor. This includes participation in all in-season and offseason (year-round) school class-period practices, workouts, and/or meetings.
A homeschooled student must abide by the rules and regulations as provided in the LISD Student Code of Conduct.
The homeschooled student must ride district-provided transportation to games/events.

Restrictions:

A homeschooled student is not permitted to participate in a sport/event/activity during the remainder of any school year during which the student was previously enrolled in a public school (LISD and/or other public district).
A homeschooled student is not permitted to participate in more than one athletic period during the day. (UIL rule for all enrolled students.)
