Lockhart ISD Board approves tax rate decrease

In a 7 - 0 vote at the regular Board meeting Monday evening, the Lockhart ISD Board approved a tax rate of $1.2636 for 2019. This new rate is a decrease of seven cents from last year’s tax rate of $1.3326.

Additionally, the effective tax rate, what taxpayers actually pay, is a 4.358 percent decrease even as property values increased in the community

“We are grateful to the Board for their leadership during this period of fast-growth,” said Superintendent of Schools Mark Estrada. “We also appreciate the work of Sen. Judith Zaffirini and Rep. John Cyrier during the recent legislative session to balance the needs of taxpayers and Texas public education through needed school finance reform.”

During the most recent legislative session, HB 3 required every school district to reduce its Maintenance & Operations rate by seven cents, providing relief to taxpayers. To compensate for the decrease in tax collections, HB 3 also provided additional state revenue to districts to compensate for the reduction.

Should voters pass the bond in the upcoming November election, the 2020 tax rate would increase by eight cents. In 2021, the tax rate would then decrease by eight cents with the application of state funds designated for instructional facilities.
