Education Foundation hosts successful golf tournament to benefit teachers

The Education Foundation for Lockhart ISD held its 2nd Annual Chip-in for Lockhart ISD Golf Tournament at the Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle this weekend. The annual event is a major fundraiser for the Foundation, providing financial support to district teachers in the form of innovation grants that help boost student learning in LISD.

“The tournament was a tremendous success--great golf, great food, and a whole lot of fun,” said Education Foundation Board of Directors President Tim Clark. This is the Foundation’s most important fundraising event of the year.

Funds raised last year through sponsorships provided for $50,000 in grants that went directly to classroom teachers. Clark noted, “The support and generosity we received last Saturday will allow us to do that again next spring, and for that we are immensely grateful.”

Chip-in for Lockhart ISD Committee Chair Alfonso Sifuentes added, ”The Education Foundation would like to thank the sponsors, volunteers, and the players that made this golf tournament a success. We dedicate these funds to the selfless, hard-working teachers of the district."

In support of the Foundation, principals from every campus, representatives from the Lockhart ISD leadership team, and students from Lockhart High School volunteered at the tournament. There were also many LISD staff who competed in the tournament, including the superintendent of schools. LISD Trustee Steve Johnson also competed, with his team securing a repeat first place finish to win the tournament.

“One of the biggest strengths for our district is the significant support from the Education Foundation for Lockhart ISD,” shared Superintendent Mark Estrada. “These are community members with jobs, families, and other responsibilities, and they still make time to volunteer to support our school district. The time they invest, and their efforts throughout the year, make a difference in the quality of instruction for our students.”

Each year, teachers apply for the grants, demonstrating very clearly in their applications how they would use grant funds to boost student learning. Those applications are reviewed by the Foundation, and in the spring, Foundation members surprise teachers at school with large checks to notify winners.  “Seeing the looks on the faces of our teachers and their students when the Foundation presents the checks is truly exciting,” said Estrada.
