Lockhart, TX - Lockhart ISD has once again earned national recognition from The NAMM Foundation as a Best Community for Music Education (BCME), placing the district among the top 10% of school music programs in the nation.
Now in its 27th year, the BCME designation honors school districts across the country that demonstrate outstanding commitment to ensuring all students have access to high-quality music education as part of a well-rounded academic experience. Lockhart ISD continues to stand among a select group of districts nationwide recognized for excellence in music education.
The designation is awarded following a comprehensive review process that evaluates key indicators such as student participation, funding, instructional time, graduation requirements, community engagement, and overall program support. Submissions are verified by district officials and reviewed by the arts education research organization WolfBrown.
Lockhart ISD’s music programs are rooted in access, consistency, and high expectations. All students from kindergarten through 12th grade are taught by certified music educators, with elementary students receiving weekly instruction and secondary students participating in music courses such as band, orchestra, choir, guitar, and piano, daily. The district’s intentional investment in Fine Arts supports high-quality instruction while providing students with meaningful opportunities to perform and compete at the local, state, and national levels.
“This continued recognition reflects our belief that music and the arts are essential to a well-rounded education,” said Superintendent Mark Estrada. “We are proud to provide opportunities that allow our students to grow creatively, build confidence, and develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom. This honor also speaks to the ongoing support of our Board of Trustees and their commitment to strong Fine Arts programs.”
Director of Fine Arts James Crowley added, “Earning this recognition again comes from the dedication of our educators, the passion of our students, the support of the Lockhart community, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Together, we continue to build something special through the arts.”
Each year, the program recognizes both districts through the BCME designation and individual campuses through the SupportMusic Merit Award (SMMA), helping to elevate the importance of music education across the country.
