LISD Announces New Lockhart High School Lever Leaders

May 18, 2022

In step with our commitment to #UnLockingPotential in all staff, Lockhart ISD is proud to have developed a pipeline devoted to identifying high-potential leaders and providing them opportunities to grow their leadership skills.

In 2020, we launched the “Lever Leaders” pilot at Plum Creek Elementary. This new shared leadership model provided opportunities for four teachers to lead – without having to leave the classroom. Last year, this model was expanded to Lockhart High School.

“Lever Leaders” spend 50 percent of their time teaching in their classrooms and 50 percent of their time leading teams of teachers, boosting them to even higher levels of performance. They are empowered to take on leadership roles that do not require them to become administrators, although they may choose to in the future, with greater compensation and distributed leadership roles.

After a rigorous application process, we are pleased to announce the selection of two teachers selected as Lever Leaders for Lockhart High School.

Isela Olivares | Lockhart High School

Isela Olivares is currently a fifth-grade Bilingual Teacher at Alma Brewer Strawn Elementary School in Lockhart ISD. Ms. Olivares has worked in public education since 2005. She taught third-grade and fifth-grade at Oak Springs Elementary School in Austin ISD before coming to Strawn Elementary in August 2018.

Ms. Olivares was awarded Teacher of the Year in 2010 and 2015. She has also served as a Mentor Teacher from 2009 - 2018, a Science Curriculum Writer from 2015 - 2017, a Creative Learning Initiative Leader from 2014 - 2018, and a Bilingual Dyslexia Designee from 2009 - 2018, among many other leadership roles.

Ms. Olivares earned her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from The University of Texas at Austin in 1999.

Courtney Sklar | Lockhart High School

Courtney Sklar is currently a teacher and coach at Lockhart High School. She has worked in public education since 2016. Prior to joining Lockhart ISD in 2020, she served as a teacher and coach in Rice CISD.

As a member of the Lockhart High School Biology teaching team, Ms. Sklar has demonstrated classroom leadership and management skills that actualized a station rotation format of lessons and accelerated the growth of all students enrolled in both her on-level and honors classes. Her understanding of intrinsic motivation as a coach translated into leading others to success by setting high expectations and driving the fundamentals in an academic setting.

She has demonstrated leadership in education for both academics and athletics, which translated to a diverse coaching portfolio including Varsity and Junior Varsity Volleyball Assistant Coach, Varsity Cheer Coach, Varsity Track Coach (with state and regional qualifiers), Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Coach, and UIL Science Coach.

Ms. Sklar earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Texas A&M University - College Station.

Congratulations to our new high school Lever Leaders! We are proud of you for being #LockedOnExcellence in teaching and leading, and we look forward to seeing you #UnLockPotential in our students and staff next school year.
