LISD Medication Policy

To ensure the safe dispensing of medications during school hours, LISD Policy states any medication brought to school by a student or parent for administration must appear to be in the original container and be properly labeled. All medications to be given during school hours are to be kept in the school clinic unless special arrangements have been made with the nurse.

Over the counter or non-prescription medications (such as Tylenol, cough syrup, etc.) will be given for five consecutive school days when sent in the original container and accompanied by a parent note. Medical treatments, including prescription and non-prescription medication, to be given on a daily basis or as needed for the duration of the school year require both a parent and doctor’s note. School health protocol signed by the LISD medical consultant allows for oral acetaminophen (generic Tylenol) to be given according to age/weight directions on the bottle label only under the following condition: Temperature (fever) of 100.2 or greater.

Emergency Cards

It is extremely important that we receive a completely filled out emergency card on every student. This is our only way of locating a parent/guardian in case of an emergency. Any health problem that your child has, whether new or ongoing, illness, surgery, or injury should be noted on the emergency card. This information will be shared with LISD staff on a need to know basis.

Immunizations

All students enrolled in our school must have the following immunizations:
1. their 4th tetanus after their fourth birthday.
2.  Their 3rd polio after their fourth birthday.
3.  Their 1st measles, mumps, and rubella after their 1st birthday and a 2nd measles before starting school.
4.  Completed their Hepatitis B vaccine (three in the series) by the time they are 12.

5.      Varicella vaccine or Chickenpox disease - Student must have proof that he had one or the other. If your child receives the Varicella vaccine after the age of 13 then they will have to get two doses.

Please notify the clinic if your child has any special needs.

The nurse takes a special interest in your student as an individual and wants to provide the best care for him / her. She feels that students should be in school as much as possible and tries to keep them in the classroom if at all possible. She will work with the teachers and parents to keep your child as healthy as possible. If you have any concerns or information for the nurse, please call or drop by her office.

If your child is experiencing fever ( 101 or higher ) they need to stay home from school until they are fever free for 24 hours.  Your child’s absence from school should be called into the attendance clerk.  These measures will help ensure your child and other students stay healthy and decrease the spread of illnesses to other members in our school.
