Elective Courses

A
rt (Grades 7, 8) - Daily, Full Year
Students are exposed to a wide variety of ways to look at and create art.  Drawing, painting, sculpture, and ceramics are just a few of the subjects studied.  Students study and create art from different cultures and time periods including the influence of technology on the art of today.  Projects may vary from year to year, but the basic areas of study remain the same.

Athletics (Grades 7, 8) - Daily, Full Year
Students enrolled in athletics are required to participate in at least 2 sports to receive credit for the class.  Students may choose from football, volleyball, basketball, and track.  Tennis, golf, cross-country, and soccer are also available; however, students do not have to sign up for the athletic class to participate in these sports.  Students must have a medical physical on file to participate in any sport.  Athletics is an extra-curricular activity and is subject to the no-pass/no-play laws.  Participation in athletics requires students to spend extra time at school for practice and for games, and parents are responsible for this transportation.


Band (Grades 6, 7, 8) - Daily, Full Year
The first part of the year begins with instruction in music fundamentals such as rhythm, counting, pitch perception, etc.  The students then begin learning a musical instrument incorporating the above musical concepts.  Students will have the opportunity to perform at concerts and other events.  Any student enrolled in band is expected to progress on his/her instrument through daily practice and drills.  Parents must provide transportation to and from events such as evening concerts.  Band students are required to either rent or buy an instrument.  Students interested in band will be tested on the instruments and will be assigned an instrument the directors feel they will be most successful with.

Choir (Grades 6, 7, 8) - Daily, Full Year
In choir the emphasis is placed on creative self-expression and individual voice training.  The Choir learns many songs and performs at numerous exciting activities.


Conversational Spanish (Grades 6, 7, 8) - Daily, Semester/Nine Weeks
This course is an introduction to the study of standard Spanish and Hispanic culture through conversation, grammar, reading, and writing. The focus is on basic communication skills, pronunciation, writing and reading comprehension. Recommended as a prerequisite for Spanish I in eighth grade.

Health (Grade 7) Daily, Semester
This class is an introduction to information/skills necessary for lifelong health and wellness. Students begin this course by conducting a mini-research into personal family health histories. Next students delve into the major human body systems from integumentary to reproductive (and everything in between). Students learn the purpose of these bodily systems and what keeps them functioning at optimal performance.

High School Health (High School Credit) (Grade 8) Daily, Semester
This is a comprehensive course of study of the concepts and skills that foster individual personal health and safety.  This class is offered during the regular school day the first semester and as a “0” period class at 7:00 a.m. during the second semester.  This class is offered to help students earn credits early who are planning on taking an advanced curriculum in high school along with participating in multiple extra-curricular courses.

Humanities (Grades 6) Daily, Nine-Weeks
This course is a combination of Choir, Theatre Arts, Foreign Language and Crafts. Each session will be 9 weeks in length. This course is designed to give students exposure to several different areas of fine arts.

Intro Health Science Technology (HS Credit) (Grade 8) Daily, All Year
This course gives an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, environmental, and informational systems of the health care industry. The focus is on career exploration, leadership development, and ethical and legal issues, and the history, economics, and trends in financing health care.  Students will develop a concept of health and wellness from the perspective of a health consumer as well as a potential professional in the health care industry.    Students will learn a minimum amount of skill practice in the classroom such as CPR, first aid, and taking vital signs.  This course meets the high school “Health Education” graduation requirement.

Physical Education (Grades 6, 7, 8) Daily, Full Year
This course is designed to provide students an opportunity to experience a variety of team sports. The following aspects of sport are emphasized: Developing skills that improve one's strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, and speed. Individual goals will be set in these areas: 1) Understanding the rules and regulations that govern each sport (through participation in a variety of modified drills and games) 2) Understanding basic forms of team play and strategy 3) Exhibiting sportsmanlike behavior.

Skills For Living (Grade 8) Daily, All Year
Students study five different units of knowledge and skills (personal development, relationships, personal and home management, food nutrition, clothing and textile) important to their ability to live more fulfilling lives.

Spanish I (High School Credit) (Grade 8) Daily, All Year
This course requires Grade Level Principal approval.  It is much more demanding than conversational Spanish. It is an introduction to the study of standard Spanish and Hispanic culture through conversation, grammar, reading and writing.  The focus is on basic communication skills, pronunciation, writing and reading comprehension.

TAG (Grades 6, 7, 8) Daily, Full Year
(Requires district approval) This course is offered through the district to those students who have qualified through testing.


Technology Applications (Grades 7, 8) Daily, Semester, Full Year
The student will use applications such as keyboarding, database, spreadsheet, word processing, and power point.  The students will also learn proper and appropriate internet search techniques and navigation.

Theatre Arts (Grades 6, 7, 8) Daily, Nine-Weeks, Full Year
This class will focus on the importance of teamwork through various activities.  Students will learn improvisations, acting, play production, and theatre terms.
 

Yearbook (Grade 8) Daily, Full Year
Yearbook sponsor has final approval. The objective of this class is to design the yearbook.  Students will be involved in all aspects of creating the yearbook including: photography, computer graphics, and layout as well as sales and bookkeeping procedures.
