Britannica is a free, useful encyclopedia choice on the Internet.  For example, if you are looking for information on Thomas Jefferson, simply click on Humanities and in the long white search box type in Thomas Jefferson and push enter.  Click on the word "Article" and then click "Next" to continue getting your information on this topic.
 

FUNK AND WAGNALLS ENCYCLOPEDIA
Funk and Wagnalls comes to the web with a multimedia encyclopedia that includes more than 25,000 reference articles, a dictionary, and world news items. It also includes interactive animations and is free.
 

THE ENCYCLOPEDIA MYTHICA
This is an encyclopedia on mythology, folklore, mysticism, and more. It contains hundreds of definitions of gods and goddesses, supernatural beings, and legendary creatures and monsters from all over the world.
 

ENCYCLOPEDIA SMITHSONIAN
The Smithsonian Institution receives a great many public inquiries covering a wide range of topics.  Therefore, the following responses have been compiled to answer frequently asked questions or to provide guidance in finding the requested information. Topics covered include:  Armed Forces History, Anthropology, Mineral Sciences, Musical History, Physical Sciences, Services, Textiles Conservation, Transportation History, and Vertebrate Zoology.
