GREGOR THE OVERLANDER: BOOK ONE IN THE UNDERLAND CHRONICLES

GREGOR AND THE PROPHECY OF BANE: BOOK TWO IN THE UNDERLAND CHRONICLES
When giant roaches kidnap Boots and take her back to the Underland, Gregor follows to retrieve her. Soon he discovers that they are both implicated in “The Prophecy of Bane,” which warns of the dangers of a terrifying white rat. Guess whose job it is to destroy it? (Scholastic Press, 2004)

GREGOR AND THE CURSE OF THE WARMBLOODS: BOOK THREE IN THE UNDERLAND CHRONICLES
Gregor and Boots must return to the Underland to help find a cure for a deadly plague called the Curse of the Warmbloods. Gregor is desperate to succeed because, along with several of his Underland friends, a member of his own family is stricken. (Scholastic Press, 2005)

GREGOR AND THE MARKS OF SECRET: BOOK FOUR IN THE UNDERLAND CHRONICLES
Gregor sets out to solve a mystery involving the Underland mice and ends up discovering a terrible secret. Gregor must now take up the sword that Vikus offers him…what will he do now.

Task:

Students can work independently or in teams. Teams cannot be bigger than four students - NO EXCEPTIONS! Students can record answers to quiz questions on a sheet of paper. Teams can have one sheet of paper but all team members’ names must appear on the paper.

Students will work their way through the four challenges. Challenges will be based on the Underlander Series and on real world science and/or social studies. The first challenge will be based on the first book in the series, the second challenge will be based on the second book in the series, and so on. Students must take the quiz based on the book and then work through the scavenger hunt.

1) What room was Gregor in when he and Boots fell into the Underland?

2) How does Gregor’s relationship with Luxa change over the course of the novel?

3) What creatures think that Boots is a princess?

4) From the details and descriptions of the Underland, draw a map of Gregor's journey from his laundry room to the Underland and back again. Be sure to include Regalia; the lands of the crawlers, spinners, and gnawers; and the portals through which Gregor and Boots travel.

5) How have the inhabitants of the Underland adapted to their environment? What would happen if they came to the surface?

Scavenger hunt:

1) Find a picture of the anatomy of a spider and print it out!

· Take this picture to the science teacher on campus who has an arachnid in her room.

· Find out the name of her arachnid and write this on your anatomy picture.

· Also, have the teacher sign your anatomy picture.

2) Go to World Book Online and type in “Cockroaches”

· Print out the first article that appears on the search results

· Read the article and underline what you need to do to prevent having cockroaches in your home.

3) Underground cities are not as fictional as The Underland Series itself. Why is it believed that underground cities were built/enlarged? Prove your answer by printing out the article you found it in, and underlining your answer.

4) Next, find a tunnel here on campus. Clue…The tunnel to the Underland was surrounded by washing MACHINES and here on campus the tunnel is also surrounded by MACHINES. Look for a clue inside the tunnel. This clue will lead you to the last challenge in this scavenger hunt!
