Scott L. Taube
Lockhart ISD Director of Bands/High School Head Director

Mr. Taube has a distinguished and diverse career as a conductor, composer/arranger, and a teacher.  As an enthusiastic music educator, he advocates music in the schools as a vital component of a student's education.  He is a staff arranger for the University of Washington Husky Marching Band which performed his music during their 2001 Rose Bowl halftime show.  Mr. Taube won a composition contest for "Rainier Fanfare" and was premiered in February 2005 by the Dallas Wind Symphony at the Morton Meyerson Concert Hall in Dallas, Texas.

Mr. Taube brings 20 years of teaching experience to Lockhart ISD.  Most recently, he served as Associate Director of Bands at Lakeview Centennial High School in Garland ISD.  In one year, the team of directors guided the marching band to their first U.I.L. Division One rating in nine years and advanced to the area contest.

In Washington, Mr. Taube was at Western Washington University in Bellingham, conducting the Wind Symphony, Opera Orchestra, teaching conducting, and was Director of Wind and Percussion Studies.  He also served on the faculty of Pacific Lutheran University where he guided the band program to premier three new compositions for wind band, and a Scandinavian Tour featuring performances in the famous Glass Cathedral in Hamar, Norway and the Aula in Oslo.  From 2003-2006, Mr. Taube was the Music Director and Conductor of the semi-professional Washington Wind Symphony in Redmond.

Mr. Taube ventured to the Pacific Northwest from Abilene, Texas, where he served six years a Director of Bands, Brass Instructor, and Professor of Instrumental Music Education at McMurry University.  During his time in Texas, Mr. Taube was the Music Director and Conductor of the Abilene Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and a frequent guest conductor of its parent organization, the Abilene Philharmonic.  Mr. Taube's prior university appointments include the University of West Georgia in Carrollton, Arizona State University (Tempe), and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

During his tenure at the University of West Georgia, the Symphony Band was selected to perform at the Georgia Music Educator's Association Convention.  Mr. Taube was also the Musical Director and Conductor for the Atlanta Wind Symphony where he began a series of basic repertoire recordings for music educators.  While working on a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Instrumental Music and Conducting at Arizona State University, Mr. Taube served as an assistant to the band, music education, and orchestra programs.

His teaching career began at Riverview High School in Michigan and continued at Lake Central High School in Indiana.  Under Mr. Taube's direction, his high school concert and marching bands received many honors for their outstanding performances.  Mr. Taube is active as a teacher, speaking at clinics, adjudicating various festivals, and frequently appearing as a guest conductor.

Mr. Taube holds a Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees from the University of Michigan where he was a conducting student of Elizabeth A. H. Green, H. Robert Reynolds, and Larry Rachleff.  Additional prominent conducting mentors have included Richard Strange and Henry Charles Smith.  While attending the University of Michigan, Mr. Taube also arranged music for the highly-acclaimed Michigan Marching Band.  He has been and continues to be an active member in many musical organizations, including College Band Director's National Association, Texas Music Educator's Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, College Music Society, and the Texas Bandmaster's Association.

 

Clay McNeill
Assistant Director/Lockhart ISD Percussion Instructor

Clay McNeill begins his 10th year as a music educator and his first year at Lockhart ISD.  He has previously been assistant band director and percussion coordinator with UIL Sweepstakes winning band programs throughout Texas at San Marcos CISD, Wylie ISD, and most recently at North Shore Senior High School of Galena Park ISD in Houston.  As a percussion specialist, his arrangements of concert band music and drum line shows have been performed by schools in Texas and Oregon.  

He is a former member of the Velvet Knights Drum and Bugle Corps of Anaheim, CA and the Sky Ryders Drum and Bugle Corps of Dallas, TX.  While earning his Bachelors of Music from The University of North Texas, he was a member of the Marching Green Brigade, UNT Steel Drum Band, and World Champion UNT "A" Drumline. Mr. McNeill also performed professionally in Dallas, TX with the "PanHandlers" steel drum band and in Buffalo, NY with "Pan Pan Pan, All Day Pan!" steel drum band.  Today Mr. McNeill lives in Austin with his wife Jenni where they are thrilled to be back in Central Texas

He has been and continues to be an active member in many scholastic and musical organizations, including Texas Music Educators Association, Percussive Arts Society, Texas Bandmasters Association, and Association of Texas Professional Educators.

 

Joseph B. McKelvey
Lockhart Junior High Head Band Director

Mr. McKelvey is from Alice, Texas and is a graduate of Alice High School.  As a member of the award-winning Alice High School Marching Band, Mr. McKelvey was clarinet section leader and was drum major his senior year.  After graduation, he attended college at Texas A&M University at Kingsville (formally Texas A&I University) where he studied Clarinet with Dr. Nancy King-Sanders.  While at TAMUK, Mr. McKelvey was a member of the Wind Symphony, Symphonic and Concert Bands as well as the Clarinet Choir.  He was also a member of the Javelina Marching Band, the "Pride of South Texas" for 4 years and was clarinet section leader his senior year.  He was also a member of the collegiate chapters of MENC (Music Educator's National Conference) and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia as well as the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.

He is a 2001 Honors Graduate from TAMUK and began his teaching career in Beeville ISD.  During his first year in Beeville, Mr. McKelvey was the 6th grade coordinating director in charge of the beginning band at Thomas Jefferson Intermediate School.  Mr. McKelvey's bands at Jefferson Intermediate received a sweepstakes rating three years in a row at the invitational Cobra Band Festival.  Mr. McKelvey became the head director at Moreno Junior High School his second year at Beeville in addition to his responsibilities at Jefferson Intermediate.  Mr. McKelvey's top band received a rating of "excellent" in both concert and sight-reading and advanced to the area round of the TMEA State Honor Band Competition.  His students in Beeville have placed chairs in the District, Region, Area and Texas All-State Bands and have received superior ratings at solo and ensemble contests at the region and state levels. 

Mr. McKelvey is currently the band director at Lockhart Junior High where he teaches beginner clarinet, oboe and bassoon classes.  Mr. McKelvey is the conductor of the 2nd Period Concert Band, LJHS Wind Ensemble, and assists with other performing ensembles in Lockhart ISD.  Mr. McKelvey's primary instruments are clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, piano and organ.  Mr. McKelvey holds memberships in the Texas Music Educator's Association, Texas Bandmaster's Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, International Clarinet Association, The Association of Young American Organists, and the American Guild of Organists.
