LJHS Principal Lori Davis headed to Harvard this summer

Lockhart Junior High School Principal Lori Davis has been selected to attend the Harvard Improving Schools: The Art of Leadership Institute in June. Davis is one of only 45 school leaders in the state selected for this program sponsored by Raise Your Hand Texas.

Each year, Raise Your Hand Texas sponsors principals across Texas to attend specialized training at the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s (HGSE) Principals’ Center. The aim is to empower Texas school leaders to affect meaningful change for children. The application process is competitive and rigorous for principals, but for those selected for the program, the training and associated costs with traveling to Harvard University are completely taken care of by Raise Your Hand Texas.

While at Harvard, Davis will develop goals and an action plan to implement at Lockhart Junior High School to boost instruction and learning. When she returns to Lockhart, she will also receive additional support and resources from Raise your Hand Texas during the plan’s implementation.

“I am truly excited to have been chosen for this opportunity,” said Davis. “With the honor of being selected comes the responsibility of bringing back ideas that will benefit every child attending Lockhart Junior High School. With Raise Your Hand Texas as a partner, I know we will be successful in taking instruction and learning to another level for our Lions!”

Superintendent Susan K. Bohn added, “This is a district that places a high value on continuous learning. While the district strives to provide local opportunities for professional development, we are grateful to partners like Raise Your Hand Texas for generously sponsoring an opportunity such as this to support principals, who bear incredible responsibilities, and provide them the tools and network they need to be successful.”

Davis is the fourth Lockhart principal to be chosen for the Harvard program for principals. Strawn Elementary Principal Dr. Patricia Rocha attended in 2011 while at a previous district. LISD Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Mark Estrada attended in 2013 while principal at Plum Creek Elementary School. Most recently, Lockhart High School Principal Luciano Castro attended in 2017, with an accompanying team that included Deputy Superintendent Kimberly Brents, LHS Assistant Principal Matthew Altman, and LHS Instructional Coaches Mark Hernandez and Lindsey Pilgrim.

We are grateful to Raise Your Hand Texas for their continued support of Lockhart ISD.  Raise Your Hand Texas is an Austin-based foundation devoted to advancing research-driven innovation in public schools and working to apply innovations statewide to benefit all Texas students.
