LISD Board honors Regional Track & Field stars

Board recognizes Regional Track & Field Qualifiers and Champion/State Qualifier
Posted on 05/21/2018

The Lockhart Lions and Lady Lions Track Teams had a very successful 2018 season with several athletes competing in the Region IV - 5A meet.

Advancing to the Regional meet is quite an extensive process that requires placing in the top four in our very competitive District in order to advance to Area, again having to place in the top four to advance to Regional Competition, which is one step away from the State Meet!

In order to qualify for State, you must finish in the top two.

Region IV is comprised of 8 Districts with 69 teams, and Lockhart finished with amazing results against the top 16 competitors in the Region.

Here is an overview of their accomplishments this year:

Senior Luke Hippensteel, in his second Regional appearance, ran the 800m and placed 14th with a time of 2:06.41.  He will continue running at Trinity University in the fall.

Sophomore David Mendez-Serrato, in his first Regional appearance, ran the 1600m with a time of 4:39.35 and finished 10th.

The Varsity Girls 400m Relay, with back to back Regional appearances, placed 8th with a time of 50.43 with Freshman Star Fletcher-Shoels, Senior Xavia Thompson, Sophomore Josette Medina, and Sophomore Madison Armstrong. The girls broke their 800m Relay school record three times this season with a time of 1:45.52.  The previous record was set in 1994.

Senior Skylar Griffin, was our Area Pole Vault Champion!  This was his third Regional appearance, and he cleared 13' 9" in the pole vault for a 7th place finish.  He will attend Abilene Christian University in the fall.

Sophomore River Bailey was our District Champion in the 3200m and 1600m runs.  This is his first Regional appearance, and he ran the 1600m in 4:27.89 and 3200 meters in 9:46.78 and placed 6th and 7th places respectively.

Senior Xavia Thompson, won back to back District Championships in the 100 m dash both her junior and senior year.  This is her second Regional appearance, and she is the 2018 Regional Champion in the 100 m dash with a winning time of 12.59.  Xavia qualified to run at the UIL State Track meet which is the highest level of competition where the top two Regional finishers advance.  She finished her season with a personal best time of 12.22 seconds and is the 8th fastest girl in the State of Texas 5A Division! Xavia is only the third girl to run the 100m dash at the State Meet to represent Lockhart ISD. She will be attending UTSA in the fall.

We are incredibly proud of this team of student athletes and head boys coaches David Currey and Scott Hippensteel, assistant coach David Sambrano, and head girls coach Michelle Washington.
