LHS announces partnership with Texas State to boost college-going culture

Lockhart ISD is proud to welcome five Texas State University students serving as mentors at Lockhart High School and Pride High School. The students are part of the G-Force Mentoring Program, an initiative that aims to raise awareness of the value of higher education, provide one-on-one mentoring with high school students to show them how to apply for college and financial aid, and motivate students to work towards their highest potential.

Lockhart High School Career and College Counselor Veronica Suarez works throughout the school year to prepare students for higher education, but she notes the G-Force mentors are particularly effective because students can partner with actual college students, and that peer connection is important in demonstrating what is truly possible for students.

“We are so excited to have five Texas State students assigned to Lockhart High School this year,” said Suarez. “When our students have the opportunity to interact with peers who are in college right now and can provide advice and support that is timely and relevant, it makes a big difference in our students seeing themselves as able to go to college, too.”

The G-Force mentors assigned to Lockhart High School are Rodrigo Ruiz Caro, Corina Ramirez, Corey Cupples, Elisa Rivera, and Blanca Rawlings.

“The district enjoys a very close partnership with Texas State University,” said Superintendent Mark Estrada. “Texas State provided five G-Force mentors to work with us this year. The impact the mentors have upon our students is significant and life-changing.”

G-Force mentors have already begun working with students and will remain throughout the school year. To learn more about the G-Force Mentoring Program, visit https://www.research.txstate.edu/p16-initiatives/about.html.
