Baruti Kafele leads LISD professional development for instructional staff and leaders

Lockhart Independent School District hosted Baruti Kafele, former principal and internationally renowned education thought leader, to provide a day of instructional and leadership professional development to an auditorium filled with instructional staff and leaders at the Gerry Ohlendorf Performing Arts Center Monday.

“In what ways does your practice inspire classroom excellence?” Kafele challenged attendees. “Are your students at an advantage because you are their teacher?” Teachers, instructional coaches, campus administrators, and district administrators alike focused on the wisdom and challenges Kafele shared throughout the training. When Kafele asked questions of participants, he had no shortage of teachers willing to share their insight to create an interactive experience. The excitement in the room was palpable.

Kafele noted, “This is a district that creates a lot of advantages for young people, because in the short time I have been here, I felt the energy and enthusiasm in this room, which was not necessarily my norm--especially in such a large space. People had the willingness--the audacity--to express so much. This is a good place for young people!”

Kafele later led leadership development in the afternoon for administrators and aspiring leaders, placing emphasis on the importance of continuous learning as a part of being a leader. “You have to be the lead learner in your school,” he shared. He also noted one cannot lead a school from the main office, challenging all leaders to spend more time in the classrooms, hallways, and cafeteria to build relationships and connect with the people they lead.

Superintendent Mark Estrada stated, “As a district committed to continuous improvement, it was powerful to hear a message of encouragement as we strive for excellence. Principal Kafele inspired all to be intentional with how we create what students feel, hear, feel, and experience at school as the vehicle for growing each student 1.5 years.”

The day of professional development with Kafele was made possible by the generous sponsorships of the 2018-2019 LISD Preferred Community Partners, including Lockhart Motor Company, SFE, Hometown Cinemas, Okami Dojo, Walsh Gallegos, Golden Age Home Assisted Living, Camp Gladiator, Pfluger Architects, SBS, First Lockhart National Bank, Texas Farm Bureau Insurance, Green Group, RFBCU, Duran Gravel Co., Inc., Fred & Shelly Weber, Bois D’Arc Assisted Living, Sage Capital Bank, Great Clips, Boy Scouts of America, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the Association of Texas Professional Educators.

“The district truly appreciates the support provided by our LISD Preferred Community Partners,” said Estrada. “Each year, with their donations, we are able to bring the very best in education to provide training to the district’s most valuable resource--our staff.”
