Lockhart ISD Superintendent Susan Bohn announced the selection of David Ross Baker as the new director of secondary education for the school district. The Board of Trustees approved the hire at the Board meeting May 22, 2017.  Baker began today.

Baker most recently served as the assistant superintendent of curriculum, instruction and assessment at Waskom ISD, providing leadership in numerous aspects of school management including curriculum and instruction, instructional materials, professional development, special programs, federal programs, grant management, testing and accountability, instructional technology, and working with the education foundation.

During his tenure, he helped Waskom ISD adopt the Fundamental 5 instructional strategies, emphasized the integration of technology in all core classrooms, and implemented programs to boost student learning including the Neuhaus Phonics program, 6+1 Writing Traits, and The Leader in Me program.

Baker’s previous education experience includes teaching elementary in Tyler ISD and secondary in Big Sandy ISD. He then took a promotion as executive director and campus pastor for six years at Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship in Tyler. In that role, he was responsible for marketing, development, budgeting, and community relations. Following his time there, he became principal of Cumberland Academy Middle School for two years and later assistant superintendent at Waskom ISD.

“The district is very fortunate to have Mr. Baker’s leadership and experience to help boost student learning at our secondary schools,” said Superintendent Bohn. “It was a rigorous selection process with a number of strong candidates. We are excited about him joining the leadership team.”

Baker takes the position being vacated by Dr. Pam Johnson, who has worked in Lockhart ISD for 11 years. Dr. Johnson is retiring from the district and has taken a position as a professor at Mayville State University in Mayville, North Dakota.

Baker earned his associate’s degree in agriculture science at Tyler Junior College. He then earned a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and a Masters in Education Leadership at The University of Texas at Tyler.

He is currently enrolled in a doctoral program at St. Thomas University. He also serves as the president of the Texas Middle School Association, which he joined as a board member in 2012.

Baker is a Caldwell County native and is excited about being closer to family.
